Grade 3 Math: Number unit
Students build, compare, round and count numbers to 1000, add and subtract with blocks and columns, and show times and sharing with arrays and plates. They also meet fair shares, equal fractions and simple scaling, then run a number booth for a friend.

Lesson 1: Build numbers to 1000
Learning goal: We are learning to read, build and take apart numbers to 1000.
Success criteria:
- I can read a number to 1000.
- I can show it with blocks.
- I can break it into hundreds, tens and ones.
Minds On (8 min)
- Hold up 1 flat and 3 rods. Ask: "What number do these blocks show?"
- Count the flats by 100, the rods by 10, then the cubes.
Action (22 min)
- Model trading 10 cubes for 1 rod and 10 rods for 1 flat.
- Partners build a number card with blocks and say it aloud.
- Talk about where big numbers show up: bus numbers, page numbers, prices.
- Complete the worksheet.
Consolidation (10 min)
- Partners swap block numbers and read each other's.
- Exit: "How many cubes are in one flat?"
Blocks and numbers
Look at the blocks. Follow the question.
- What number is this?
- What number is this?
- 200 + 40 + ? = 243
- Make 146. Draw the blocks.
- How many cubes are in one flat?
Answer keys with worked steps are in the Teacher Guide.
Performance task: The number booth
You run a number booth at a fair.
| Category | Level 1 | Level 2 | Level 3 | Level 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Knowledge and Understanding | Level 1: needs a lot of help to build the number. | Level 2: builds a number and names some parts. | Level 3: builds the number and names every part. | Level 4: shows the number in more than one way. |
| Thinking | Level 1: needs a lot of help to choose. | Level 2: compares with some help. | Level 3: compares and rounds correctly. | Level 4: explains why the rounding makes sense. |
| Communication | Level 1: shows little of the work. | Level 2: shows some of the work with pictures. | Level 3: shows the work clearly with pictures and numbers. | Level 4: explains each step with clear words. |
| Application | Level 1: needs a lot of help to share or add. | Level 2: shares or adds with some help. | Level 3: shares fairly and adds correctly. | Level 4: solves the booth problems and checks each answer. |
