Unit Plans

Grade 1 Math: Algebra and Coding unit

Students find and make patterns, use rules to say what comes next, and look at number patterns to 50. They explore what changes and what stays the same, test if two sides are equal, and give a robot steps on a grid. They finish by planning a party for friends and checking their plan.

Ontario curriculum expectations covered

C1.1
Spot and describe what repeats in everyday and made patterns.
C1.2
Make patterns and show the same pattern with sounds, moves, objects, shapes, letters or numbers.
C1.3
Say a pattern rule, then use it to extend, predict and fill gaps.
C1.4
Make and talk about number patterns up to 50, including adding and taking away facts.
C2.1
Tell apart things in real life that change and things that stay the same.
C2.2
Decide if two adding or taking away expressions make the same amount.
C2.3
Use equal amounts to show one number in many ways, up to 50.
C3.1
Write and run simple step-by-step code to solve a problem.
C3.2
Read code, change it, and say what the change does.
C4
Use the steps of mathematical modelling to understand, plan and check a real situation.
