Grade 1 Math: Measurement unit
Students learn that things can be measured in different ways: length, mass, capacity, area and angle. They compare and order everyday objects, use cubes to measure length, and then learn to read a calendar to find days, weeks, months, holidays and seasons. They finish by comparing three objects in more than one way.

Lesson 1: Long and short
Learning goal: We are learning that length tells how long something is, and we compare lengths.
Success criteria:
- I can say that length tells how long.
- I can say which one is longer or shorter.
Minds On (8 min)
- Hold up a long pencil and a short crayon. Ask: "Which one is longer?"
- Say the word length together. Length tells how long.
Action (22 min)
- Show how to line up two objects so one end of each starts at the same place.
- Partners compare pairs of objects and say longer or shorter.
- Students complete the worksheet, using cubes to check.
Consolidation (10 min)
- Each student shows one object and a longer one.
- Exit: "Which is longer, the pencil or the worm?"
Long and short
Look at the picture. Follow the words.
- Which is longer? Circle it.
- Which is shorter? Circle it.
- Colour the longest one.
- How many cubes long is the crayon?
- Draw a line shorter than the worm.
Answer keys with worked steps are in the Teacher Guide.
