Grade 1 Math: Data and Probability unit
Students sort things by a rule, ask a question and collect answers in tally tables, show the data in concrete graphs and pictographs, and tell which group has the most. They then use the words impossible, possible and certain, predict what a new group will choose, and test it. They finish by running their own class survey.

Lesson 1: Sort by one rule
Learning goal: We are learning to sort things into groups by one feature and say our rule.
Success criteria:
- I can sort things into groups.
- I can tell my sorting rule.
Minds On (8 min)
- Put students with shoes with laces on one side and without laces on the other. Ask: "What is my rule?"
- Switch the rule and sort again.
Action (25 min)
- Model sorting a handful of blocks by colour into hoops and name the rule.
- Partners sort a bag of buttons any way they like, then partners guess the rule.
- Complete the worksheet, using real objects when needed.
Consolidation (10 min)
- Gallery walk: look at two other sorts and guess the rules.
- Exit: "What is one way to sort shapes?"
Sort the shapes
Look at the shapes. Follow the question.
- How many red shapes?
- How many blue shapes?
- How many circles?
- Colour the squares.
- How are these sorted? Tell the rule.
Answer keys with worked steps are in the Teacher Guide.
Performance task: Our class survey
Find out what your class likes best.
