Grade 2 Math: Algebra and Coding unit
Students explore patterns in shapes, growing towers and numbers, use pattern rules to predict, and learn that a symbol can stand for a number. They balance equal and unequal sides, then give a robot steps on a grid, fix bugs and see how two jobs can run together. They finish by planning a garden path as a mathematical model.

Lesson 1: Patterns in shapes and designs
Learning goal: We are learning to spot patterns in shapes and designs and say what we see.
Success criteria:
- I can find a pattern in a design.
- I can say what repeats.
- I can tell how a pattern is made.
Minds On (8 min)
- Show a woven band with a red circle, blue square, yellow triangle design. Ask: "What do you notice in this design?"
- Students point to the shapes and say what they see.
Action (22 min)
- Build a pattern with pattern blocks and name the part that repeats.
- Partners make a pattern and swap seats to say what repeats in their friend's.
- Complete the worksheet.
Consolidation (10 min)
- Share patterns found around the room: floors, shirts, windows.
- Exit: "What part repeats in this design?"
Find the pattern
Look at each pattern. Follow the question.
- Circle the part that repeats.
- How many shapes repeat?
- Circle the pattern that repeats.
- How many red circles?
- What comes next on the fence?
Answer keys with worked steps are in the Teacher Guide.
Performance task: Plan a garden path
Our school garden needs a tile path. Plan it. Check it.

Lessons in this unit
- Patterns in shapes and designsLearning to spot patterns in shapes and designs and say what we see.C1.1
- Patterns that grow and shrinkLearning to tell when a pattern grows, shrinks or stays the same size.C1.1
- The same pattern in a new wayLearning to show one pattern with shapes, numbers, sounds and actions.C1.2
- Pattern rules and predictionsLearning to use a pattern rule to finish a pattern and to guess what comes later.C1.3
- Number patterns up to 100Learning to find and make number patterns that count up and down.C1.4
- Mystery numbers and things that changeWe are learning that a shape or letter can stand for a number we do not know or a number that changes.C2.1
- Same or not the sameLearning to tell when two sides are equal and when they are not.C2.2
- Make both sides equalLearning to add or take away so both sides are equal, and to split a number in different ways.C2.2, C2.3
- Coding: steps in orderLearning to give a robot steps in order to reach a goal.C3.1
- Coding: read, fix and change codeLearning to read code, find a mistake, fix it, and see how a change affects where the robot goes.C3.2
- Coding: two things at onceWe are learning that two parts of code can happen at the same time and that a wait can keep things apart.C3.1, C3.2
- Modelling: plan a garden pathLearning to plan a real path with a pattern, count what we need, and check if our plan works.C1.3, C2.1
Ontario curriculum expectations covered
- C1.1
- Spot and talk about patterns in shapes and designs, including ones that grow, shrink or repeat, in everyday life.
- C1.2
- Make a pattern and show it again in a different form, such as shapes, numbers, sounds or actions.
- C1.3
- Work out a pattern rule, then use it to finish the pattern, find a missing piece, and guess near and far parts.
- C1.4
- Create and describe number patterns that count up or down, for numbers within 100.
- C2.1
- Notice when a symbol stands for a number that changes or is unknown, and say how it is used.
- C2.2
- Add or take away so that two sums or differences become the same amount.
- C2.3
- Use the idea that one number can be split into parts in many ways, and parts add back to the whole.
- C3.1
- Write and run simple code, including steps that happen one after another or at the same time.
- C3.2
- Read code, change it, and say how the change changes the outcome.
- C4
- Use the steps of mathematical modelling to plan a real situation, make a prediction and check it.
