Grade 2 Math: Measurement unit
Students compare lengths, measure with cubes and clips, and see that a smaller unit needs more of them. They then use a centimetre ruler, start from other numbers, learn the metre, and make good guesses. They finish by telling how much time passed in seconds, minutes and hours.

Lesson 1: Longer, shorter, the same
Learning goal: We are learning to compare how long things are by lining them up.
Success criteria:
- I can line things up at the start.
- I can say longer, shorter or the same.
Minds On (8 min)
- Two students stand back to back. Ask: "Who is taller? How do you know?"
- Talk about why we line up at the same start.
Action (22 min)
- Show a short and a long ribbon. Line them up at one end and compare.
- Partners sort ten classroom items into longer than their pencil, shorter, and the same.
- Complete the worksheet, using real items when needed.
Consolidation (10 min)
- Each student shows one thing longer than their hand.
- Exit: "Which is longer, and how do you know?"
Longer or shorter
Look at the picture. Circle your answer.
- Which is longest? Circle the letter.
- Which is shortest? Circle the letter.
- Which two are the same length?
- Draw a line longer than the ribbon.
- Which is longer? Circle the letter.
Answer keys with worked steps are in the Teacher Guide.
Performance task: Measure and time
You are a measuring helper. Measure things and tell what you find.
