Grade 2 Math: Data and Probability unit
Students sort things in Carroll and Venn diagrams and two-way tables, collect answers with tally marks, and show them in object graphs, pictographs, line plots and bar graphs. They find the mode, use graphs to make choices, and learn the words impossible, possible and certain. They finish by running a class survey and guessing what another class will pick.

Lesson 1: Sorting by colour and size
Learning goal: We are learning to sort things into groups by one feature.
Success criteria:
- I can sort things by colour.
- I can sort things by size.
- I can count each group.
Minds On (8 min)
- Show a bag of mixed blocks. Ask: "How can we sort these?"
- Students share ideas, then sort with the class rule: red or not red.
Action (24 min)
- Model sorting into two hoops with a rule card. Count each hoop.
- Partners sort a bag by colour, then re-sort the same things by size.
- Complete the worksheet.
Consolidation (8 min)
- Gallery walk: guess each partner's sorting rule.
- Exit: "How did you sort your things?"
Sort and count
Look at the things. Follow each question.
- Circle the red ones.
- How many are big?
- How many are small?
- Which group has more? Circle it.
- How many things in all?
Answer keys with worked steps are in the Teacher Guide.
Performance task: Our class survey
Ask your class a question. Show the answers. Guess what another class will pick.
| Category | Level 1 | Level 2 | Level 3 | Level 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Knowledge and Understanding | Level 1: needs a lot of help with the survey and graph. | Level 2: collects answers and makes a graph with some help. | Level 3: makes a graph with a title and key, finds the mode, and makes a guess. | Level 4: explains the mode clearly and gives a reason for a guess about another class. |

Ontario curriculum expectations covered
- D1.1
- Sort people or things by two features using tables and diagrams like Venn and Carroll.
- D1.2
- Collect answers by watching, trying and asking, and record two pieces of information in a tally table.
- D1.3
- Make graphs with one picture, block or mark for each answer: real-object graphs, pictographs, X-mark plots and bars, each with a title, labels and a source.
- D1.4
- Find the mode or modes of a data set shown in a graph or table, and say what it tells us.
- D1.5
- Ask and answer questions about data, draw conclusions, and make a choice that can be explained.
- D2.1
- Use the words impossible, possible and certain to tell how likely something is, and use that to predict.
- D2.2
- Guess and then test whether the mode of one group will match the mode of a different group.
