Grade 2 Math: Number unit
Students read, build, compare and count numbers to 200, make good guesses, and tell even from odd. They share things fairly, meet halves, fourths, thirds and sixths, then add, take away, make equal groups and share up to 12 things equally. They finish by making a number book about one number.

Lesson 1: Read and show to 200
Learning goal: We are learning to read numbers to 200 and show them with blocks.
Success criteria:
- I can read a number up to 200.
- I can show a number with blocks.
- I can tell where numbers are used.
Minds On (8 min)
- Show 134 with blocks. Ask: "What number do you see?"
- Talk about places we see big numbers: pages, prices, house numbers.
Action (22 min)
- Build a number with 1 flat, rods and cubes. Say each part.
- Partners build a number card and read it to each other.
- Complete the worksheet, using blocks when needed.
Consolidation (10 min)
- Show blocks on the board. The class reads the number.
- Exit: "What number is 1 flat, 3 rods and 4 cubes?"
Read and show
Look at the blocks. Write the number.
- What number is shown?
- What number is shown?
- What number is shown?
- How many tens rods?
- What number is missing?
Answer keys with worked steps are in the Teacher Guide.
Performance task: My number book
Make a book about your number.
