Grade 2 Math: Geometry and Transformations unit
Students count the sides and corners of shapes, sort shapes by their sides, find equal sides and square corners, and find fold lines of symmetry. They put shapes together and take them apart, check when shapes match exactly, slide, flip and turn shapes, and read and make simple maps with steps. They finish by making a map of a shape town and telling a friend the steps to walk.

Lesson 1: Sides and corners
Learning goal: We are learning to count the sides and corners of shapes.
Success criteria:
- I can count the sides of a shape.
- I can count the corners of a shape.
Minds On (8 min)
- Hold up a triangle and a circle. Ask: "How are these different?"
- Run a finger along a straight side. Say: a side is a straight edge.
Action (25 min)
- Show a corner as the spot where two sides meet. Put a counter on each corner.
- Partners trace the sides of a cut-out shape, counting each one, then count the corners.
- Students notice that the number of sides and corners is always the same for a flat shape with straight sides.
- Complete the worksheet.
Consolidation (10 min)
- Hold up shapes turned in different directions. Students show the number of sides with their fingers.
- Exit: "How many sides does a triangle have?"
Count sides and corners
Count. Write the number in the box.
- How many sides?
- How many corners?
- How many sides?
- How many corners?
- Circle the shape with 4 sides.
Answer keys with worked steps are in the Teacher Guide.
Performance task: Shape town map
Make a map of Shape Town.
